The Road from Pusac to Uchumarca is Recommended for Drivers with Strong Nerves
Carretera Púsac-Uchumarca is a high mountain road located in the Bolívar Province of Peru. This road tests the skill and courage of any driver. It’s definitely not for those suffering from vertigo or a fear of landslides.
How Long is the Road from Pusac to Uchumarca?
Located in the northern part of the country, the road runs from Púsac (at 1,434m above sea level) towards Uchumarca (at 3,684m above sea level). The unpaved road is quite narrow and steep. It’s 34.1 km (21.18 miles) long, carved mostly out of the side of a steep mountain. The road is bordered by drops of hundreds of meters (many hundreds of feet) with no guardrails for protection.
What is Cuesta de Uchumarca?
The most challenging part of the road is a short 4.9 km (3 miles) section featuring 16 hairpin turns. In this section, the elevation gain is 454m, with an average gradient of 9.26% and sections reaching up to 15%. The road and the scenery, however, are very impressive. Avoid traveling this road in severe weather conditions.
