The Scenic Unpaved Road to Vientos Pass in the Andes

Paso El Viento is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 5,012m (16,443ft) above sea level, located in Palca District of Tacna Province, in Peru. It’s one of the highest roads in the country.

Where is Paso El Viento?

The pass, also known as Paso de los Vientos, is located below Huancune volcano, in the Tacna Region, in the southern part of the country, near the Chilean border.

Is the road to Paso El Viento unpaved?

The road through the pass is totally unpaved. It’s called Ruta 40. It’s a pretty challenging drive with turns, steep parts, and curvy sections. A high clearance vehicle is recommended, especially after rains.

How challenging is Paso El Viento?

Set high in the Cerro Barroso range of the Andes, remember the elevation can be a factor for both the driver and the vehicle. So extreme care is required.

How long is the road through Paso El Viento?

The road through the pass is 154km (96 miles) long, running north-south from Tripartito, a town on the border with Bolivia, to Tacna.
