Abra Tolconi
Abra Tolconi is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 4.860m (15,945ft) above the sea level, located in the Andes of Peru, in the Arequipa Region.
The road to the pass is gravel. It’s not a good surface and is located on the route from Caylloma to Quiñota. On the summit the landscape is expansive and you can see miles of terrain. Don’t forget water, food, extra fuel, a warm jacket, a good GPS and maps. Due its unique location and the climb in elevation over thousands of feet, and passing through remote areas, it is important when driving in these conditions to be prepared.
After rain, even a single rainfall, conditions of the road can be challenging. Avalanches, heavy snowfalls and landslides can occur anytime and can sometimes block some sections of the road, being extremely dangerous due to frequent patches of ice. The climb is on gentle gradients and a good surface.
