Dare to drive the dangerous Punta Chanca
Punta Chanca is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 4.852m (15,918ft) above the sea level, located in the Department of Lima, in Central Peru.
The road to the summit is called Carretera 113 (LM-113). It was totally paved in 2019. The asphalt is of very poor quality. In addition, the width of the road in some sections is less than 3 meters causing fatal accidents due to its narrowness. There are plenty of steep sections and you will be grinding up in your lowest gear for quite a few hours.
The pass road is 61km (37 miles) long, running west-east from Cajatambo (in the province Cajatambo) to Oyón (in the province Oyón). The drive is very steep, hitting a 27% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. The summit offers great views of Laguna Tocto.
