How to drive to Perdidos Canyon in the Peruvian desert?
El Cañón de los Perdidos is a very scenic canyon located in the Ica province of Peru. The road to the canyon is challenging to find, as some sections are missing or unmarked, requiring you to navigate through the open desert. The canyon extends 5 km and was discovered in 2011. Formed by the erosion of the Río Seco, it features a lagoon and is frequented by vultures.
Where is Perdidos Canyon?
The canyon is located in the Ocucaje desert, halfway between Ica and Nazca, in the southern part of the country. This place is still untouched by mass tourism, so you’ll find no food or other services nearby.
When was Perdidos Canyon formed?
It is believed that this area was once part of the ocean, a theory supported by fossil remains found in the surroundings. This canyon was geographically formed along the same route as the Río Seco de Ica. It is believed to be an ancient seabed, shaped over time by water and strong winds. According to paleontological studies, this formation dates back 20 to 30 million years. Fossil remains of whales, sharks, seashells, penguins, birds, and other animals suggest that it was once a water reserve.
Why is it called Perdidos Canyon?
The name "Cañón de los Perdidos" was given after an expedition in 2011 led by then-mayor Pablo Alvites, along with a group of locals and journalist Maycol Herrera. During their journey, they got lost for several hours before finally reaching the canyon. In the end, the journalist decided to title his report "Cañón de los Perdidos" (Canyon of the Lost), and the name has remained ever since.
How long is Perdidos Canyon?
Located in the Ica Desert, this canyon reaches a depth of approximately 400 meters and is often compared to the Grand Canyon due to its imposing beauty. Inside, visitors can admire an impressive geological formation. The entrance consists of four levels, with two of them featuring a large and a small lagoon. The canyon is approximately 2 km long.
Can I drive to Perdidos Canyon?
The road to the canyon is entirely unpaved, running through desert dunes. In certain areas, there is no defined path, so a good GPS or an experienced guide is highly recommended to avoid getting lost. Starting from the Panamericana Sur highway, the track to the canyon is about 50 km (31 miles) long. In parts, the road is marked by stones, and in others, you’ll have to follow the tracks of previous vehicles. When neither is available, ground corrugations can indicate past traffic. A 4x4 vehicle is required.
How challenging is the drive to Perdidos Canyon?
It is not recommended to reach Perdidos Canyon on your own. Many people who have tried to go in their own cars have gotten lost because there are no marked roads. Additionally, bandits take advantage of the lack of phone signal in the area to steal cars or valuables, leaving visitors without a way to call for help. It is a ride across the Peruvian desert, so expect isolation, desolation, lack of directions, and harsh desert conditions.
Is Perdidos Canyon worth it?
Along the route, visitors pass rock formations resembling animals and mystical shapes. The canyon itself has four levels, featuring sites like the "Ojo de Agua," "Cara del Puma," "El Tobogán," and fossilized shells. The Ica River at its end hosts small fish and seasonal shrimp. Situated in the heart of the desert, the canyon has captured attention for its incredible structure, which can be appreciated both from above and from within.
The canyon is home to specific flora and fauna, including vultures, lizards, and arachnids. At its confluence with the Ica River, smaller marine animals and herons can be seen. The area also features vegetation such as huarango trees and palm trees.
