Driving the defiant Puchka cliff canyon road

Cañon del Rio Puchka is the name of a very challenging drive located in the Ancash region of Peru.

Puchka cliff canyon road

Carved by the river Puchka, one of the main tributaries of the Marañón River, the canyon becomes a deep gorge with almost vertical walls, oferring sweeping views. The road through the gorges, also known as Garganta del Diablo (Devil´s throat), is called 14A. It was totally paved in 2019-2020.

Tucked away on the northern part of the country, on the eastern slope of the Cordillera Blanca, the road is extremely narrow and challenging, with severe drop offs. The most challenging part of the drive, carved into cliffs, is about 3km (1.86 miles) long. The road ends at Puente Copuma (located between Huánuco and Áncash junction).
