Driving the breathtaking road to Abra Mañazo

Abra Mañazo is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 4.518m (14,822ft) above the sea level, located in the Puno province of the Puno Region, in Peru.

Abra Mañazo

Set high on the southeastern part of the country, the road to the summit is totally unpaved. It’s called Carretera Panamericana. Attempting it in anything but a High-Clearance, preferably 4-wheel drive vehicle is a recipe for disaster. The road is pretty rough and sections are very bad.

The pass is 55.2 km (34.29 miles) long running east-west from Mañazo to 34C road. The gradient is pretty gentle, staying at around 2%. The drive offers sweeping views and there are a couple of pretty lakes (Laguna La Calzada and Laguna Maquera) with lots of birdlife.
