An epic road to Abra Ares in the Andes
Abra Ares is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 5.018m (16,463ft) above the sea level, located in the region of Arequipa, in Southern Peru. It’s one of the highest roads of the country.
Set high in the Andes mountain range, the road to the summit is totally unpaved but navigable by all passenger vehicles. Remember this is a mountainous area, climbing up a high mountain, with a notorius absence of oxygen. Altitude and extreme weather are always a factor. The pass road is 19.2 km (11.93 miles) long, running south-north from Illigua to Chahuaña. The drive is steep, hitting a 10.4% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps.
