Travelling through the dangerous Karkatera Tunnels
Located in Peru's Apurímac region, north of Abancay, the road through the Túneles de Karkatera, also known as Túneles de Carcatera, is one of the most dangerous drives in the country.
Located on the right bank of the Pachachaca river, the road is totally unpaved and very narrow, with a dangerous drop (more than 1.500 meters) over the river. It’s impassable for 2 medium cars at the same time. The route is dangerous. Not recommended to newbies.
The winding and dangerous drive features 3 tunnels (hence the name) carved into the mountain, ranging from 5 to 50 meters long. This engineering work is a very important tourist attraction in recent years. If you're afraid of heights, it's probably best to keep your eyes forward.
Nestled high in the mountains, the drive offers great views of the Pachachaca river canyon. It is recommended to drive this road in the dry season, from April to October. Ideal time to travel is daylight. Not advised night drive.
