The road to the lagoons is entirely unpaved, requiring a 4x4 vehicle due to its rough condition. The journey is difficult, with 12 hairpin turns and steep sections, reaching a maximum gradient of 11% on some ramps.

The road reaches an elevation of 3,927m (12,883ft) above sea level. Due to the altitude, it is cold, and rain or heavy fog is common, so dressing warmly is advised. The road can become impassable due to snowfalls.

Starting from the unpaved road between Berlín and Vetas, the highest town in Colombia, the road is 5.2 km (3.23 miles) long. It passes through private property, and there is a small toll to access the lagoons.
