The volcano is located in the southwestern part of the country, in the Andes mountain range, near the departmental capital Pasto. It is currently the most active volcano in Colombia. The summit is home to many communication towers.
How long is the road to Galeras Volcano?
The road to the summit is extremely challenging. It’s entirely unpaved, with dozens of hairpin turns, steep sections, and dangerous drop-offs. The drive is not for everybody. Starting from Pasto, the road is 18.4 km (11.43 miles). Over this distance, the elevation gain is 1,410 m. The average gradient is 7.66%.
