The road is 438 km (272 miles) long, running along the South Pacific Ocean. The road is fully paved, with a perfect surface, but expect some closures after bad weather due to rock slides and washouts.

Where Does Ruta 1 in Chile Start and End?

Ruta 1 starts in Iquique, a coastal city to the west of the Atacama Desert, and ends near Antofagasta, a port city and the capital of Antofagasta Province and Antofagasta Region. This drive passes through remote areas, so you need to be prepared. Expect very little traffic in the southern part.
