Driving to Parinacota, One of the Highest Towns in the World
Parinacota is a small town located at an elevation of 4,400 meters (14,400 feet) above sea level, in Putre, within the Parinacota Province of Chile. It’s one of the highest towns on Earth that is accessible by car.
Where is Parinacota?
The town is situated in the Arica and Parinacota Region, in the northern part of Chile, near the Bolivian border, within the stunning Lauca National Park. This zone is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, including snow-capped peaks like Pomerape and Sajama, hot springs, high-altitude lakes such as Chungará and the Cotacotani Lagoons, as well as wetlands teeming with unique and diverse flora and fauna.
How Long is the Road to Parinacota?
The road to Parinacota was completely paved in the early 2020s. Known as A-93, it stretches for 89 km (55 miles), running from Chucuyo to Visviri, the hamlet that serves as the capital of the General Lagos commune.
