Paso la Chapetona, pure adventure in the Andes
Paso la Chapetona is an international high mountain pass at an elevation of 3.654m (11,988ft) above the sea level, located on the border of Argentina and Chile. The road is less used due its difficulty.
Located in the Andes mountain range, the pass is also known as Paso del Azufre Norte. It links Calingasta (a department of the province of San Juan in Argentina) and the Coquimbo Region of Chile. It’s totally impassable in winters.
The road to the summit is unpaved. It’s called Ruta Lapislázuli. 4x4 vehicles only. It’s an old mining road to serve Los Azules y Los Altares mines. It’s only drivable on the Chilean side (25km long from Monte Patria city). On the Argentinian side is simply a mule track.
