Quime-Sacambaya Valley Road
The Quime-Sacambaya Valley Road is a high mountain narrow trail located in the La Paz Department in Bolivia, southeast of the city of La Paz. The route has humbled many egos. It’s not for the sissies and shouldn’t be attempted by novice drivers.
The road is gravel but extremely narrow, with several hairpin turns. It links the small mining town of Quime and the Sacamba Valley, located at the junction of the Inquisivi and Ayopayo Rivers.Drive with care as this is a mountain road with dangerous dropoffs. With drops that appear to be hundreds, if not a thousand feet to the side, experienced drivers are the only ones who should attempt this route. The drive is around 50 km long surrounded by high peaks of the Andes. Parts of the road are often washed out after rains. Landslides are common. Be prepared, this road is not for the faint of heart or ill prepared. One mistake can have serious consequences. This is definitely not a Sunday drive. You might want to take this into consideration if you have passengers that don't like heights. The drive will take some skill, some patience, and some tolerance for vertigo. It's very intense because there are no guard rails at the edge and there is little room for error if oncoming traffic swerves in your direction. The road was featured in Discovery’s Treasure Quest.
