Colquechaca is a small town at an elevation of 4,167 m (13,671 ft) above sea level, located in the Province of Chayanta, in Bolivia. It’s one of the highest towns accessible by car on Earth.

What does Colquechaca mean?

The town's name, derived from Quechua, means "silver bridge," possibly referencing the area's historical connection to silver mining.

Why is Colquechaca famous?

Located in the Department of Potosí, in the central part of the country, Colquechaca is said to be the highest city in Bolivia, with residences up to 4,235 meters (13,894 feet) above sea level. The town is known for its rich indigenous Quechua heritage, with most of its population of around 4,270 people descending from this group.

How long is the road to Colquechaca?

The road to the town is totally unpaved and narrow in parts. It’s 47.2 km (29.32 miles) long, running from Macha to Rancho Tarueca.
