This rugged pass lies to the north of La Paz, in Bolivia’s La Paz Department, nestled in the eastern Andean region.

Is the road to Sarani Pass unpaved?

The track traversing the pass is entirely unpaved. Known as part of the Illampu route, it was once just a footpath for pack animals, but has been upgraded in recent years to support mining activity and adventurous tourism.

How long is the road to Sarani Pass?

The route stretches approximately 140km (87 miles), beginning in the town of Sorata. With altitudes consistently above 4,000 meters, the journey includes several challenging climbs, deteriorated sections, and demands both physical preparation and proper acclimatization.

Can I drive to Sarani Pass in winter?

Located at the northern tip of the Cordillera Real, Sarani Pass often experiences snowy conditions, especially outside of the dry season. It’s recommended to only attempt the drive in stable weather.
