A challenging unpaved road to Abra Falda Cienaga
Abra Falda Cienaga is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 4.436m (14,553ft) above the sea level, located in Catamarca Province of Argentina.
The road to the summit, also known as Abra Puntas Gordas, is totally unpaved. It’s called Ruta Provincial 43 (RP43). 4x4 vehicle required. Stay away if you're scared of heights. The bad state of the road from the Salar del Hombre Muerto to Antofagasta make the climb hard work – there are quite a few sandy and corrugated sections. Set high on the northwestern part of the country, the road is being improved the last times. Some sections are currently asphalted. The surface is generally better on the descent (south side) of the pass.
