Salar del Hombre Muerto
Salar del Hombre Muerto is a salt pan at an elevation of 4.000m (13,123ft) above the sea level, located in Catamarca, in northwestern Argentina.
The road to the salt lake is called RP43. It’s gravel. 4wd recommended. The brine in Salar del Hombre Muerto is rich in lithium, an element used in a wide range of products from batteries to medication. Wet conditions may make for tough driving along the muddy road. The bad state of the road from the Salar del Hombre Muerto to Antofagasta make the climb hard work – there are quite a few sandy and corrugated sections. Avoid driving in this area if unpaved mountain roads aren't your strong point. Stay away if you're scared of heights. The surface is generally better on the south side.
