Camino de Los Túneles
Camino de Los Túneles (Road of the Tunnels) is a very exciting journey located on the geographical center of Argentina, in the foothills of the Sierras Chicas on the Suquía River. This challenging drive features 5 tunnels and several bridges.
Located in the Cordoba province of Argentina, the road is called Ruta Provincial 28 (RP28). It’s unpaved and links the provinces of Córdoba and La Rioja. It’s 10.9 km long. This beautiful mountain road begins at kilometer 83. The access road was paved in 2017. Once you've reached the top, and gone through the first tunnel you get an awesome view on the valley. It's all flat until the horizon line, and dark green.
The road was built in 1930. The road is not easy for drivers who are prone to vertigo. It includes a pigtail, a turn which loops over their own road, allowing the road to climb rapidly. Along the way are a few viewpoints, where it’s possible to watch condors flying. High risk of rock slides.
The road is narrow with some scary drop offs (hundreds of meters). It’s not easy for drivers who are prone to vertigo. The most famous tunnels of the drive are called Chancaní and Taninga. The landscape is completed with the view of native trees that grow on the edge of the abyss, the condors that fly over the Quebrada de la Mermela and the Riojan plains that are lost on the horizon.
