Faro Cabo Blanco
The Cabo Blanco lighthouse is Argentina's oldest surviving lighthouse. It’s located in Santa Cruz Province, within the Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve.
The road to the lighthouse, built in 1916, is called Ruta Provincial 91. It’s 33.3 km long, covered in 'ripio' or 'gravel'. It starts in the Ruta Provincial 14 and ends at the lighthouse. Do not travel this road in severe weather conditions. The zone has a semi-arid climate so expect unpredictable changes in weather throughout the year, plus high winds. The speed limit is therefore limited to 60km per hour, and it is worth adhering to these rules rather than dealing with the repercussions of a cracked windscreen or flat tyre! The surface on this gravel road is often loose, especially along the sides of the road and it can get very muddy and slippery after rain making it challenging to get through. The lighthouse is located on a rocky headland at the end of the Provincial Route 91. It’s 67-meter (220 ft) high. This scenic drive offers the opportunity to see some of nature largest marine animals in their natural environment. This is a maintained road where a high clearance 2WD vehicle is able to travel safely at low speeds on long dry straight-of-ways, without losing control due to wash boarding, ruts, or dips. But it’s highly recommended to hire a 4x4 vehicle in order to minimize your chances of a mishap, and maximize your comfort levels.
