Ruta Provincial 3
The Ruta Provincial 3 road is a very scenic drive located in the Valdes Peninsula, on the Atlantic coast in the north east of Chubut Province, Argentina.
The road is 67 km long and covered in 'ripio' or 'gravel'. It links Estancia Punta Norte and Puerto Pirámides, the only town on the peninsula. Do not travel this road in severe weather conditions. Valdes Peninsula has a semi-arid climate so expect unpredictable changes in weather throughout the year, plus high winds. The speed limit is therefore limited to 60km per hour, and it is worth adhering to these rules rather than dealing with the repercussions of a cracked windscreen or flat tyre! The surface on this gravel road is often loose, especially along the sides of the road and it can get very muddy and slippery after rain making it challenging to get through. This scenic drive offers the opportunity to see some of nature largest marine animals in their natural environment. This is a maintained road where a high clearance 2WD vehicle is able to travel safely at low speeds on long dry straight-of-ways, without losing control due to wash boarding, ruts, or dips. But it’s highly recommended to hire a 4x4 vehicle in order to minimize your chances of a mishap, and maximize your comfort levels.
