Ruta Provincial 70, a drive you'll never forget
Ruta Provincial 70 is a high mountain dirt track located in the Jujuy province, Argentina, in the extreme northwest of the country, at the borders with Chile and Bolivia, with a length of 41km.
This gravel trail starts in the junction with the Ruta Provincial 7, near the Pozuelos Lake (‘Monumento Natural Laguna de los Pozuelos’) in the Departments of Yavi, Santa Catalina and Rinconada. It’s an important lake with an area of 180000 square metres and at an altitude of 4320 m.a.s.l, making it one of the most important and beautiful water courses of the province. It is considered a Biosphere Reserve.
The road ends on the junction with the Ruta Nacional 40 (National Route 40 or RN40, often called Ruta 40), the longest route in Argentina and one of the largest in the world. Due its unique location and the climb in elevation over thousands of feet, and passing through remote areas, it is important when driving in these conditions to be prepared. Portions of the road may be temporarily closed due to road work or inclement weather. The area can be visited the year round. In the southern hemisphere summer there may be difficulties to access due to rainfalls. Ask in Abra Pampa or Cieneguilla on the condition of the road.
