Cerro Aspero, a thrilling (scary) off road experience
Cerro Aspero is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 1.964m (6,443ft) above the sea level, located in Calamuchita Department of the province of Córdoba, Argentina.
Set high in the Pampeanas Range, the road to the summit is extreme. It’s totally unpaved, narrow and very rocky. 4x4 vehicles with high clearance only. It’s said to be one of the hardest trails in the country. The road features a short section with 18 hairpin turns, known as Los Caracoles (The Snails).
Starting at Pueblo Escondido, an ancient tungsten mine, the road to the summit is 3km (1.86 miles) long. It’s very steep, hitting a 16% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. Over this distance the elevation gain is 309 meters. The average gradient is 10.3%. Always check the weather forecast before you start your journey: the winters are very harsh.
