Ruta de los 7 Lagos, an iconic drive in Patagonia
Ruta de los 7 Lagos (Seven Lakes Route) is a very scenic drive located in Neuquén Province, in northwest Patagonia, northern Argentina.
The road is totally paved. It was originally known as Provincial Route 234, which now forms part of the famous Route 40 and winds through one of the most picturesque areas of Patagonia. This road runs through two national parks: Lanín and Nahuel Huapi. The road was fully paved in 2015 after 30 years of work. Running through the forested slopes of the Andes, the road is named after 7 lakes of the zone: Machónico, Escondido, Correntoso, Espejo, Lácar, Falkner and Villarino. Be alert: there are many heavy semi-trailer trucks on this road.
The drive is 107km (66.48 miles) long and runs from Villa La Angostura and San Martin de los Andes in the province of Neuquen. Plan 1 day to complete the drive with stops. Ideal time to travel is daylight. The road is very scenic, along the shores of crystal clear deep blue lakes, and winds through gorgeous scenery of snow-capped mountains, deep, cold lakes, lush native forest and gushing waterfalls.
