Travelling through the curvy Cuesta del Portezuelo road
Cuesta del Portezuelo is a short winding mountain road located in the Valle Viejo department, in the southeast of the Catamarca province, in the northwest of Argentina.
The road is totally paved. It’s 16,8 km (10.43 miles) long, and runs from RN 38 road towards Ruta Provincial 2, through the Sierra de Ancasti mountain range. The road is extremely curvy, with hundreds of turns and hairpin turns. The construction of the road began in 1933 and was inaugurated in 1939.
The road is steep, topping out at 1.771m (5,810ft) above the sea level. The average gradient is 6% but some ramps hit a 20.7% of maximum gradient. Along the road, it’s possible to observe the incredible green landscapes that are found there. The road is pretty narrow.
The road is described as a "bridle path", as a reference to its former condition of a road only suitable for horses, which did not allow the circulation of vehicles. Cuesta del Portezuelo is one of the most visited attractions in the province, due to its high landscape value and its proximity to the capital city.
