Abra Muñano, a road less traveled
Abra Muñano is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 4.067m (13,343ft) above the sea level, located in Rosario de Lerma department, in Salta Province, Argentina.
The winding road to the summit is unpaved. It’s called R12. Most of the time, the road is accessible by passenger car and RV. It’s 16.6 km (10.31 miles) long with a dizzying switchback of 18 hairpin bends.
The road to the summit was bypassed by the paved Ruta Nacional 51 (RN51) which traverses the challenging Abra Blanca, on the way from Salta to San Antonio de los Cobres, in the 1990’s.
