Gold Mountain

Located in the San Bernardino Mountains, this infamous gravel road to the summit is bumped and rough. It’s called Gold Mountain Road (3N69). It is subject to winter snowfalls with such a high summit altitude, and it can be closed anytime when the access is not cleared of snow. Make sure you get your vehicle and yourself well-prepared before driving this road. After rain, even a single rainfall, conditions of the road can be challenging. Watch out for sudden loose-gravel breaks. The summit rewards the driver with spectacular 360-degree views of the desert to the north, the Big Bear valley to the south, and most of the high peaks that circle the valley.
Nestled in the heart of the San Bernardino National Forest, a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle required. Proper preparation is essential to having a safe, enjoyable trip on this road. Recommended grippy tires and a lift. And don't forget to bring a spotter. Definitely has some very technical spots. The road is pretty steep. Starting from CA-18 road, the ascent is 3.5km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 433 meters. The average gradient is 12.37%. Part of the trail has a bypass known as 3N69A that is more difficult.
