Hancock Lake
Hancock Lake is a high mountain lake at an elevation of 3.556m (11,666ft) above the sea level, located on the Rocky Mountains in Chaffee County, western Colorado, USA.
The road to the lake is rocky and gravel. It’s called Forest Road 295. The drive should not be attempted if snow is on the trail. The drive is definitely worth it. Four-wheel drive vehicles are required. This is a long and bumpy trail, but the scenery is worth the trip, through alpine tundra, pristine lakes, epic fishing and high mountain valleys.
Starting from Chalk Creek Drive the road is 6.9 miles long. The weather on this zone is harsh and highly unpredictable and it does not take much time for the bright sun shine to change over to moderate to heavy snow fall. Snow can linger at pass well into July. High alpine environment; carry adequate supplies and warm clothing even on a hot day. Weather can change quickly. The road ends at a parking area.
