Nogal Peak
Nogal Peak is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.685m (8,809ft) above the sea level, located in the Southern White Mountain Wilderness in Otero County, in the southeastern part of New Mexico.
The road to the summit, located within the Lincoln National Forest, is gravel, rocky, tippy and bumpy at times. One mistake can have serious consequences. It’s called Forest Road 108 (Tanbark Canyon Road). Road conditions are always changing. Winter comes early and stays late on this trail, so you may only be able to safely run it in the middle of the summer.
4x4 vehicle recommended. Its many twists, turns and narrows can pose a challenge to even the most experienced drivers. The winding, steep, rough dirt road is not easy, though. Up, down, right, left all the time. At the summit there’s a parking lot of the Crest Trailhead.
