Casner Mountain Trail in Arizona: The Road That Has It All!

Straddling Yavapai and Coconino counties, in the U.S. state of Arizona, Casner Mountain Trail No. 8 is one of the most scenic and rugged trails in Arizona. It’s designated as a motorized trail with very rugged conditions along a narrow ridge with limited opportunities for two-way traffic.

The road is located within the Coconino National Forest, in the north-central part of Arizona.

Why was the Casner Mountain Trail built?

Originally built to maintain power lines, its many twists, turns, and narrows can pose a challenge even for the most experienced drivers. The off-road trail was developed more recently for use by utility companies to build and maintain high-voltage power lines.

How long is Casner Mountain Trail?

The road is totally unpaved. It is 6.9 miles (11.5 km) long, running south-north from Forest 525C Road to Taylor Cabin Trail.

How challenging is Casner Mountain Trail?

Snow may be present in winter. The average gradient is 9%, with some sections up to 31%. The first mile, or perhaps a little more, features a moderate incline, but then the trail gets into 9 steep switchbacks that take you directly up the side of the mountain. The climb starts at 4,756 ft (1,449 m), cresting at 7,004 ft (2,134 m) over a distance of just 3 miles.

Can I drive my vehicle on the Casner Mountain Trail?

A 4x4 vehicle is required. A small subcompact car might have difficulties. A special permit is required for vehicles over 62 inches wide.

Is Casner Mountain Trail worth the drive?

The journey offers an exhilarating driving experience, with superb views. Along the way, you’ll enjoy some of the most awesome views of nature anywhere. It offers spectacular views of the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness, the Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness, and the Verde Valley. Wildlife is abundant, particularly in the winter months. Watch for elk and deer. An occasional bear and even a mountain lion are sometimes spotted.
