Sunset Pass
Sunset Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 1.806m (5,925ft) above the sea level, located in Garfield County, in south central Utah, United States. The road is normally an easy drive, but recommended doing it in dry weather.
The road to the summit is called NP730. It’s gravel and rocky and has no maintenance. It’s hardly used but landscapes are breathtaking. The ride is rather remote, so you need to be prepared. In case of a breakdown, there is very little in the way of passing traffic or inhabitants around, and no cell phone service in parts. The road follows a series of turns along narrow cliffs that rose quickly in elevation. The drive does not require shifting to four-wheel drive, but the lower gears come in handy for a few steep climbs and when you need to go slower through the rough areas.
Due to the high elevations and exposure, the road is subject to strong winds and rapid weather changes. Be prepared for the cold and wind! High winds blow here all year long. Even in summer you can confront with snowy days. Temperatures here in the winter are brutally cold. Take care in some of the washed-out areas to keep from getting hung up or slipping into a hole carved out by rushing waters during previous floods. Rainy weather can change conditions and turn the river into a raging killer. Definitely stay off this road during wet weather.
