Summit Pass
Summit Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 3.597m (11,801ft) above the sea level, located in the Rio Grande County, in Colorado, USA. There are a few water crossings along the way.
The road to the summit, located within the Rio Grande National Forest, is a gravel 4wd track. Do not travel this road in severe weather conditions. Avalanches, heavy snowfalls and landslides can occur anytime, being extremely dangerous due to frequent patches of ice. The road is a bit rocky and muddy in places. The road to the summit starts from Elwood Pass.
Avoid committing your vehicle to what is in front of you until you are sure of what you are getting into because things could get worse. 4x4 vehicle required. A traveler on this road must be experienced and completely devoted to safe, slow and obstacle-conscious driving to deter danger. This is definitely not a Sunday drive. The steep drive will take some skill, some patience, and some tolerance for vertigo. The road starts out as an easy graded road, called the East Fork Road by the Forest Service, which slowly changes to a rougher road with a few short hill climbs and one longer steep hill climb.
