Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel
Located in the U.S. state of Alaska, the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel is the longest combined vehicle-railroad tunnel in North America.
The tunnel, also known as the Whittier Tunnel, is a multi-use road and railroad tunnel that passes under Maynard Mountain. The tunnel is open from 5:30 a.m. until 11:15 p.m. during the summer months. In the winter the tunnel is open Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 6:15 p.m., Monday through Thursday from 8:40 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., on Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., and on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. Dangerous and objectionable materials will not be allowed through the tunnel. Convertible vehicles must have their tops up for driving through the tunnel. Long, dark, narrow and totally transcendent, the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel is 2.5 miles long.
Built in 1943, this single-lane feat of modern engineering is just 16 feet wide. The one-lane tunnel must be shared by cars and trains traveling in both directions. Rail and vehicular traffic through the tunnel is regulated by an advanced computerized control system. The tunnel lies in the scenic Portage Glacier Road. The tunnel is designed with a single highway lane. The floor of the tunnel is constructed of 1,800 texturized concrete panels with the railroad tracks sunken slightly below the road surface.
