Road trip guide: Conquering Urad Lake in Colorado
Lake Urad is a high mountain lake at an elevation of 3.288m (10,787ft) above sea level, located in the U.S. state of Colorado. Full size vehicles should not attempt to drive all the way, as there are a few very narrow spots.

The lake is located in Clear Creek County, in the central part of Colorado, in Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests within the Urad Lake State Wildlife Area. Urad Lake is a popular fishing spot just off of Jones Pass and Berthoud Pass
How long is the road to Urad Lake in Colorado?
The road to the lake is mostly unpaved. It’s called Woods Creek Road. This route is blocked by a gate located in a parking area, marked by a sign for the Urad Lake State Wildlife Area. Starting from County Road 202, also known as Jones Pass Road, the road to the parking lot it 2.09 kilometers (1.3 miles) long. This track is best suited for pickup trucks and SUVs, though it is possible, but not recommended, for cars to drive on it. The final stretch of the road is particularly challenging, with narrow parts and rocky sections.
Is the road to Urad Lake in Colorado open?
The drive is worth it, with stunning views. But it’s now a state wildlife area with limited access for motor vehicles. Accessibility is largely limited to the summer season. It is not generally snow-free until late June or even July in some years.
