A 4WD dirt road to Hunter Lake in NV
Hunter Lake is a high mountain lake at an elevation of 2.511m (8,238ft) above the sea level, located just to the southwest of Reno, in Washoe County, in the U.S. state of Nevada.
Set high in the Eastern Sierra within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, the 4WD dirt road to the lake is totally unpaved. It’s called Hunter Lake Road (#41392). The road is a but narrow for a full wife truck, but still doable. You should have no trouble getting any SUV with real 4×4 up it. However, skids plates are recommended.
The road to the summit is very steep, hitting a 17% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. Starting at Reno, the ascent is 13.67km (8.5 miles) long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 946 meters. The average gradient is 6.92%. The drive provides breathtaking views of the city and the area is beautiful.
