Adventure along Saddle Mountain Road
Saddle Mountain Road is a very scenic drive around the uniquely formed volcanic Saddle Mountain in Maricopa County, in the south-central part of the U.S. state of Arizona, west of Phoenix.
The lightly used road is 18.18km (11.3 miles) long. It’s a loop drive around Saddle Mountain, pretty difficult and lightly traveled. The trail passes through several washouts. This trail passes through remote areas, so you need to be prepared. Saddle Mountain is known for its especially beautiful scenery and ruggedness. This area is also popular for rock-hounders who will find both fire agate and chalcedony on the north side of the range. Allow for at least half a day to do this trail.
A 4WD vehicle with high clearance and an experienced driver are recommended. Take care with the weather: hot in summer and cold in winter. During and after a storm the road may be impassable, even with a four-wheel-drive vehicle. This trail is extremely scenic and can be the basis for a great day or weekend trip. The drive is certainly breathtaking and has a fearsome reputation. The drive is difficult due to many washouts, careful wheel placement needed at times, remoteness, and rockiness.
