The peak is located in the center of the Gospel-Hump Wilderness, on the north side of the Clearwater/Salmon divide, within the Nez Perce National Forest.

What’s at the summit of Square Mountain?

The summit hosts a lookout called Square Mountain Lookout. It was built in 1931 and remained in service until the 1970s. Restoration work has been ongoing since 1999.

How long is the road to Square Mountain?

The road to the summit is totally unpaved and mostly narrow. It’s called Moores Station Road (Forest Road 444). It’s 62.60km (38.9 miles) long, starting from White Bird.

Can I drive my vehicle to the lookout at Square Mountain?

The road is best suited to four-wheel-drive vehicles due to washboards and steep sections. It is not recommended for trailers. Along the way, it’s possible to see a few mines.

Is the road to Square Mountain open in winter?

Set high in the western part of Idaho, the road is usually impassable from October to June (weather permitting). Travel is best suited to start in late spring or early summer due to snow drifts.
