The Ultimate Road Trip Guide to Square Mountain
Square Mountain is a high mountain peak at an elevation of 2.435m (7,988ft) above the sea level located in Idaho County, in the U.S. state of Idaho.
Located in the center of the Gospel-Hump Wilderness on the north side of the Clearwater/Salmon divide, the road to the summit is totally unpaved. It’s called Moores Station Road (Forest Road 444). The road is usually impassable from October to June (weather permitting). Parts of this road are narrow and steep.
Located within the Nez Perce National Forest, this area includes numerous old mines. 4x4 vehicle required. The summit hosts a lookout called Square Mountain Lookout. It was built in 1931 and in service until the 1970s. Restoration work has been ongoing since 1999.
