The plateau is located in the south-central part of Utah, in the easternmost section of Fishlake National Forest. Despite its name, Thousand Lake Mountain is known more for its craggy terrain than its lakes. The views from the summit of Boulder Mountain (to the south), Capitol Reef (to the east), and the Henry Mountains (to the east) are excellent.

The road to the summit, also called Flat Top, is totally unpaved. A 4x4 vehicle with high clearance is required.
