A memorable road trip to Paradise Basin in Colorado

Paradise Basin is a high mountain basin at an elevation of 3.447m (11,309ft) above sea level located in Gunnison County, in the US state of Colorado. It’s an easy drive near the summit of Schofield Pass.

Where is Paradise Basin?

The basin is located in the southwestern part of Colorado, within the White River National Forest.

Is the road to Paradise Basin unpaved?

The road to Paradise Divide is mostly unpaved. Starting at Crested Butte is paved for the first 3.6 miles and then turns into a dirt road. It’s called County Road 734. The road is wide and in good shape. A 4WD vehicle is recommended but 2WD vehicles with good clearance and sturdy tires should be able to make it.

How long is the road through Paradise Basin?

The road through the basin is 23.01km (14.3 miles) long, running south-north from Crested Butte to Schofield Pass.

Is the road through Paradise Basin open in winter?

Set high in the Rocky Mountains, accessibility is largely limited to the summer season. It is not generally snow-free until late June or even July in some years.
