An old mine road to Eagle Pass in Colorado

Eagle Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 3.602m (11,817ft) above the sea level located in La Plata County, in the U.S. state of Colorado.

Eagle Pass

The road to the summit, located in the La Plata Mountains, within the San Juan National Forest, is totally unpaved. It’s called Lewis Creek Road. Accessibility is largely limited to the summer season. It is not generally snow-free until late June or even July in some years. The serious track is steep and rocky for its entire length. The trail requires vehicles with 4WD, high clearance, and beefy tires.  Starting from County Road 124, the ascent is very steep. The trail follows numerous remnants of Colorado's mining heritage.
