The road to the lake is totally unpaved. It’s called Shoshone Lake Road. It’s 27.68km (17.2 miles) long starting from Lander, the county seat of Fremont County. The drive is very scenic and provides stunning views of Red Butte and Lander.
How challenging is the road to Shoshone Lake?
The road is pretty defiant, with rugged and rocky sections. A 4x4 vehicle with high clearance is required. Be prepared for a steep ascent, with gradients reaching a maximum of 17% through some of the ramps.
Is the road to Shoshone Lake open in winter?
Set high in the Shoshone National Forest, the road is not plowed and closed in winters. It’s usually open from June 30 through mid-October. The road to the lake tops out at 3.212m (10,538ft) above sea level by Cyclone Pass.
