The Road To Tofty in Alaska Has it All
Tofty is an abandoned mining town located in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area in the U.S. state of Alaska. The road to the town is called Tofty Road.
The road is 23.01km (14.3 miles) long, starting beyond the end of the Elliot Highway to the North, about 1/2 mile east of Manley Hot Springs. It’s totally unpaved and not maintained during winter months. It currently terminates in the mining settlement of Tofty. It is a one-lane dirt road littered with brush and large rocks. In several places, culverts have been clogged by silt and debris and several creeks have diverted around them and over the road. The town, known for its high production, is named for A. F. Tofty who discovered gold in the area.
Due its unique location and passing through remote areas, it is important when driving in these conditions to be prepared. Always check the weather forecast before you start your journey: adverse conditions are common. There is no maintenance and there are no more road signs past mile 1.5 and is marked "impassable" by several geological maps.
