Macedonia Canyon Road: The Ultimate Road Trip Guide
Macedonia Canyon Road is a scenic drive located in the Mojave Desert of San Bernardino County, California, USA. 4WD, high clearance vehicle required.
How long is the Macedonia Canyon Road?
Located in Mojave National Preserve, the road is 10.13km (6.3 miles) long, running west-east from the paved Kelso Cima Road to Wild Horse Road, through the Macedonia Canyon. The road is easy in a 4WD vehicle, and much of the lower road should be passable in a carefully driven 2WD-HC vehicle. If driving a 2WD vehicle, inquire locally and use your own good judgment about road conditions, as the road is sandy and subject to washouts. Otherwise, this is a relatively safe road with no unusual hazards. Sand often washes onto the road under the railroad overpass at the west end. Carry a shovel to move sand if needed. Standard pickups and SUVs will probably fit, but higher-profile vehicles may not.
Is the Macedonia Canyon Road steep?
The road is pretty steep. It runs from 937m to 1.509m (4,950ft) above the sea level. This trail passes through remote areas, so you need to be prepared. The road was graded dirt, but farther up in the canyon, the road runs in a sandy wash. The railroad underpass is a bit low. Not-too-tall vehicles can get under the tracks, but the Park Rangers once left a light bar here. Cell phone service is unreliable throughout most of Mojave National Preserve.
