Conquering the Wild Horse Road in the Mojave Desert

Wild Horse Road is a very scenic drive located in the Mojave Desert of San Bernardino County, in the US state of California. A 4WD vehicle is recommended. Its southern end is sandy and soft for two miles.

The road, also known as Wild Horse Canyon Road, is located in the eastern part of California, near the Nevada border.

This graded scenic drive through the desert forms an 18.50km (11.5 miles) semi-circle off the west side of Black Canyon Road.

The road runs from its north end on Black Canyon Road near Mid Hills Campground, to its south end also on Black Canyon Road near Hole-in-the-Wall Campground.

How challenging is Wild Horse Road?

The road is steep and tops out at 1,690m (5,544ft) above sea level. A 4-wheel vehicle is strongly recommended. The road is generally well-maintained and passable in sedans, but it is subject to washouts. In particular, in the section from about 8.5 to 9.5 miles, the road runs in a sandy wash. Watch for wildlife on the road.

Is Wild Horse Road worth the drive?

The dirt road winds around and over a series of hills as it descends 1,000 feet, with the sharp peaks of the Providence Mountains in the distance. This dirt drive offers a true experience of solitude as it winds along the secluded canyon.
