Driving the wild road to Birch Creek Historic Ranch
Birch Creek is a historic ranch located in the southeast corner of Oregon in Malheur County, in USA.
Located in Jordan Valley, the road to the ranch is totally unpaved, steep and bumpy in places and there are 3 rocky creek crossings. It’s called Birch Creek Road. The ranch is remote. It was founded in 1900 and purchased by the BLM in 1988 in order to preserve the remarkable site along the wild and scenic Owyhee River.
Located within the Lake Owyhee State Park, a high clearance, four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. The road is pretty steep so trailers are limited to 16-ft length. Road conditions are always changing. Don't attempt a trip when the road is wet or snow-covered. Open year round, best access May-October.
Starting from Blowout Reservoir Road, the road to the ranch is 9.17km (5.7 miles) long. The drive is pretty steep. The elevation gain is 580 meters, and the average gradient is 6.32%.
