Wilkerson Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.902m (9,520ft) above the sea level, located in Park County, in the U.S. state of Colorado.
How long is the road to Wilkerson Pass?
Set high in the Rocky Mountains, within Pike National Forest, the road to the summit is totally paved. It’s called U.S. Route 24 (US 24). The pass road is 42km (26.1 miles) long, running west-east from Hartsel to Lake George. The pass is named for the Ohio-born John Wilkerson, who lived in the area after serving in the Civil War. The road is never too steep (has a mild approach on both sides) hitting a 5.8% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps.
Is the road to Wilkerson Pass open?
Access to the pass is typically open all year round, with the occasional closure in winters due to dangerous weather conditions. The summit hosts the Wilkerson Pass Visitor Center. It’s open seasonally during summers.
