Hayden Pass: The Complete Guide to Colorado's Scenic and Challenging Off-road Adventure
Hayden Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 3.274m (10,741ft) above sea level, located in the U.S. state of Colorado.
Where is Hayden Pass?
The pass is situated on the boundary between Fremont and Saguache counties, in the southern part of Colorado. At the summit, a sign and a spacious parking area mark the top.
How long is the road to Hayden Pass?
The road to the summit is entirely unpaved and known as Hayden Pass Road (County Road 6). It spans 26.07km (16.2 miles), stretching from Coaldale (in Fremont County) on US-50 to Villa Grove (in Saguache County) on US 285. Hayden Pass Road, once a toll road, provided wagons with a shorter route around the Sangre de Christo Range.
Is Hayden Pass open?
Nestled in the Sangre de Cristo mountains of the Rocky Mountains, the road is typically accessible from March until November. Be prepared for cool and breezy conditions at the summit.
How long does it take to drive Hayden Pass?
Hidden within San Isabel National Forest, the drive offers numerous breathtaking views. Allocate approximately 2 hours to complete this stunning journey.
Is Hayden Pass Road difficult?
The drive is challenging, featuring off-camber maneuvers on a narrow shelf road and sharp rocks. A high-clearance 4-wheel drive with low range is recommended. Both sides of the pass are steep, with gradients reaching up to 20% on some ramps, along with rocky terrain. The road presents a continuous climb with moderate rocks to navigate. Starting from Coaldale on pavement, the road transitions to a wide, smooth dirt road. A particularly narrow section of shelf road with loose rocks near the summit poses significant danger if icy, as there are no protective barriers. Stock vehicles with lower clearance may encounter difficulty due to a few larger rocks scattered along the route. Expect rough road conditions with numerous steep and rocky segments, with the possibility of encountering mud and sand.
