The road is located approximately 45 miles southeast of Mesa and about seven miles south of Superior, in the southeastern part of Arizona. The drive provides stunning views as it runs through scenic surroundings.

The road is totally unpaved, with loose sand and littered with large and small boulders. In some parts, the road narrows significantly due to encroaching trees and bushes.
Where Does Battle Ax Road Start?
It starts from Arizona-177 Road, south of Superior. You’ll need a very capable high-clearance 4x4. All primitive dirt roads may be rocky, with areas of soft gravel or sand that make travel unsafe for sedans or RVs. The main part of the trail basically follows a large wash that cuts through the center of White Canyon.
When is the Best Time to Drive Battle Ax Road?
The trail passes through several washes. At Walnut Canyon, the road has been damaged by periodic flooding, so proceed with caution. The best times to visit this trail are January through March.
