Travel guide to the top of Gem Peak in MT
Gem Peak is a high mountain peak at an elevation of 1.857m (6,092ft) above the sea level, located in Sanders County, in the U.S. state of Montana.
Set high at the southern end of the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness, the road to the summit is totally unpaved. It’s called Forest Road 2205. It’s navigable by all passenger vehicles but a four wheel drive vehicle with clearance is highly recommended. Full vehicle access depends on weather conditions. It’s a single track with a sheer drop to one side, with the final two miles being more stone than dirt.
Located within the Kootenai National Forest, the road is 6.43km (4.0 miles) long starting at Idaho Point Road. It’s steep, hitting a 13% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. The summit hosts a fire lookout tower, built in 1921.
